Issaquah is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Issaquah was founded in 1853 by George W. Nelson as a farming community on the east side of Puget Sound. It grew rapidly during the early 20th century as fishing and lumber businesses developed along the sound's eastern shoreline. In 1910, Issaquah became an incorporated city and has since become one of the largest communities in King County with over 10,000 residents. The first Europeans to visit what is now Issaquah were Spanish colonists who set up a small trading post in 1792 near present-day Tacoma. From here they traded goods such as fish and fur for local land holdings in what are today Puget Sound and Lake Washington. By 1800, Yup'ik people had settled around what is now downtown Issaquah and identified themselves with their traditional territory stretching from Seattle to Olympia south to Vancouver Island before turning westward along Elliott Bay until they reached today's Thurston Peninsula (then called Suquamish). In 1853 George W. Nelson set out from his farmstead on Puget Sound's east side to found Issaquah as a farming community on land he acquired from Yup'ik people after successful fishing expeditions up Hood Canal. The town quickly grew due to its location on the busy sound's eastern shoreline where prosperous coastal fisheries led to heavy development of infrastructure needed for both boating and agriculture products export trade along Puget Sound’s eastern shoreline – including wharves that extended into Elliott Bay for shipping goods delivered fresh or frozen onto inland markets throughout Puget Sound’s interior. The early years ofIssaquah were challenging but rewarding; fishermen brought large stocks of Chinook salmon back down through Strait of Juan de Fuca into our harbor each autumn providing much needed sustenance for farmers growing grain and other vegetables grown close by during winter months when salt water starved crops bare ground; blue crab periodically occurred offshore during low tide which provided interesting dinner conversation starters among friends ashore while exploring tidal pools offshore during high tide;and occasional whitebait trolling activity caught some nice big yellow drumlins not too far away! A major factor determining growth rates within Issaquah were immigrants like John Sturgeon who came across Spencer Inlet looking for land northwest of Seattle so he could start a new life after being released from jail following an altercation with sheriff’s deputies outside Puyallup Ferry Landing late one night; Sturgeon bought five acre parcel located just northwest of present day Stanley Park then erected two hundred fifty feet long plank fence around it creating “Sturgeon Harbor” boundary marker still visible today just inside yesterday passing park boundaries . His purchase later became nucleus around which many others arrived seeking opportunities unavailable closer home either because available farmland had been taken by buyers more interested in sheep raising or timber production nearby;many Irish American entrepreneurs followed Sturgeon making good money importing building supplies etc.; Scotsman John Macdonald also landed hereabouts sometime prior 1850 en route from his plantation at Lakeshore Farm near Port Townsend purchasing three acres southeast corner lot number Eleven Sunrise Avenue thenceforth known as Old Scotsman Domain . Enterprise began here too with arrival in1872of Norwegian immigrant Ole Olsen Larsen who established himself as locally famous lumberjack/builder/contractor working mainly within boundaries delineated by modern street names such as Greenwood Oaks Boulevard SW & Union Street NW –today home to several popular outdoor retailers including REI & Nordstrom Rack Mountain View
Issaquah was founded by the loggers, miners and traders who came to the area in the late 1800s. The city was named after Issaquah Creek, which flows through it. In 1907, Issaquah became a town when it was annexed by Seattle.
