The land that makes up Issaquah was first settled by the Klamath people in the late 1800s. In 1853, territorial governor Bidwell appointed John McLaughlin to survey land around present-day Issaquah and make recommendations on what should be done with it. McClaughlin found that much of what would become Issaquah could not be developed due to natural features or lack of available water resources. However, he did recommend that a small community be formed on the east bank of Lake Washington for workers and farmers who needed access to irrigation systems and other amenities not possible from farther away. On March 1, 1854, McCloughlin approved the establishment of Issaquah as a town with post office privileges under his name. The town’s first residents were mostly men who had come overland from various Oregon settlements looking for work on farms or ranches in King County during the Gold Rush era. By 1870, however, most ofIssaquah’s original settlers had either died or moved away because of harsh living conditions in what was then an agricultural wasteland near Seattle; only a few hundred people remained by 1900 when new transportation options made it easier for people to get around than ever before. In 1907, Issaquah became part of Pierce County when it was organized from parts of King and Snohomish counties following statehood within Washington Territory..
