The name Issaquah comes from the Ojibwe word issa meaning "the place where we get our water." Issaquah had its first post office in 1851. It became a city on December 3rd, 1907. The current mayor is Rick Simonson. The city of Issaquah was founded by pioneer Jeremiah Cowlitz and his family on February 14th, 1851 as a trading post between Seattle and Canada. He named it after Issaquah Creek which he found near his farmstead on the Susquehanna River. In 1861 when Washburne Youngs took over control of the government of King County,Issaquah became part of his new district and continued to be known as 'Issaquah'. By 1870 there were 5 businesses in town with 123 residents; four churches, two schools and one physician. One year later fire destroyed most of the buildings but not before many valuable items such as tools and furniture were saved including an old printing press that was moved to Olympia for use by that community's printery company! In 1907 Issaquah came under City Charter form adopted by voters who also grantedhood to Bellevue & Everett to make them sister cities. On December 3rd 1917 Issaquah's first school opened; Barclay School still operates today with students grades K-12th grade inclusive! In 1961 Voters approved Measure No 2 which set aside land east of I-5 for a comprehensive public works project including: A new football stadium (now called Husky Stadium),A library (then called Tacoma Park Branch Library),A sewage plant (now Bayview Sewage Plant),A park (then called Lake Union Park)and much more! Many wonderful memories have been made here during these years like President Ronald Reagan delivering remarks at the dedication ceremony for Husky Stadium while driving down State Street followed by Mayor Donny Steinberg awarding him an Honorary Citation! Today it continues to be one of America’s most vibrant cities – filled with art galleries, nightlife venues and world-renowned retailers – making it easy for everyone to enjoy all that this amazing community has to offer!

The first settlers in Issaquah were Chief Seattle's people who arrived in 1792 from British Columbia. In 1851, the town was platted as an agricultural village by John Prentice and James Boren. The name "Issaquah" (a word meaning "headwaters") was chosen because it led to a clear stream that ran through the town center. In 1875, Issaquah became part of what later would be called Seattle; but at that time there were three villages within King County: Bellevue, Woodinville, and Issaquah. In 1907, when Seattle became city-county government under Mayor Jesse Untermeyer, Bellevue split off to become its own village while Woodinville remained with Issaquah. On July 1, 1909 issue No 5 of the "Seattle Times" reported that Bellevue had voted to secede from King County and become an independent city with its own mayor and council separate from those of Seattle. At this time all three villages had populations over 3200 residents each including Issaquah which had a population of 2200 residents only! On January 1st 1911 President William McKinley signed Executive Order 10952 into law creating Tacoma as an outer limit forKing County due to overcrowding within King County homes caused by growth in Seattle which continued despite McKinley's order Tacoma made history when it became first city in America to have electric streetcar service running throughout its entire grid on November 14th 1912! This event marked not only Tacoma's entry into municipalhood but also initiatied what would eventually become Puget Sound metropolitan area
Issaquah was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. It became an incorporated city in 1907, and it is the seat of Issaquah County, Washington.
