In 1851, sawmill owners John Wesley Smith and James Watt decided to change their name to Isquah after an American Indian word meaning "garden" or "foothills." Issaquah's growth began with its location on a rich gold mine field in southeastern King County that produced some of the world's most valuable gold coins (the first being struck in 1853). Mining continued until 1957 when all production ceased due to low gold prices caused by oversupply from other countries. However, during this time period many historic buildings were built such as the old flour mill which stands today and has been used as a movie theater since 1915. later two other large mills were built; one became known as North Star and another became known as South Star. Today, Issaquah continues to be home to many businesses and residents who enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, hiking, biking and skiing. With its rich history and beautiful scenery it offers plenty for everyone to enjoy!
Issaquah, Washington was named for Issaquah, a Creek chief. The area had been inhabited by the Puyallup and Yakima nations for many years before European settlers arrived in the late 1800s. In 1851, a group of fur traders founded the town of Tacoma on the edge of what is now Issaquah. In 1861, the United States acquired Oregon from France and placed it within the new country. This led to conflict over who would control what areas. The US government decided that Tacoma should be merged with Issaquah because both towns were located on water routes connecting Puget Sound to Vancouver Island and Asia. The merger was approved, but no one lived in either town after it happened.
