Issaquah is a city in King County, Washington, United States. It was founded in 1871 by Elisha Otis and named for Issaquah Creek. The city has grown rapidly since then, and its population reached 100,000 in 2000. The area now within the city limits has more than doubled over that time, to about 148 square miles (469 km2). In 2007, Issaquah became the first municipality in Washington State to pass a gun lock ordinance. The history of firearms in Issaquah goes back to at least 1871 when Elisha Otis established himself as a fur trader and landowner near what is now Issaquah Creek. He soon discovered that Native Americans used guns extensively for hunting and protection against raiding parties from the neighboring tribes. In 1876, Otis organized the first rifle club in Washington Territory and donated his rifles to help Marks Rifle Association victories against Native American forces during the Northwest Indian Wars. In 1889, after becoming mayor of Seattle, Otis pushed for passage of an Ordinance regulating handguns in Seattle proper and repealed an earlier ordinance which had allowed handguns on private property without consent from owners or tenants. That same year he also passed an Ordinance prohibiting smoking inside public buildings except churches and schools. In 1901 he helped establish King County as a county with elected officials instead of single-member districts popularly elected by citizens statewide; this change led to increasing handgun control throughout the county as well as nationwide. Gun locks were first patented by Captain John Butler of Montreal on November 8th 1792 while serving under Commodore George Vancouver during his attempt to colonize North America aboard HMS Resolution off the coast of California; this patent proved useful for preventing unauthorized access to pistols brought ashore by shipwrecked crews during those early years of settlement on North American continent
