The Issaquah area has been inhabited by humans since at least the 10,000 BC era. The first people of the area may have come from Asia. There are references to Native Americans in local history dating back to the 18th century. One of the first European explorers to visit the Issaquah area was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. He and his group explored what is now Washington State, including Issaquah, during their trip. In 1846, a group of farmers foundedIssaquah Post Office on land that currently borders Seattle. The post office served as a stop on stagecoaches travelling between Seattle and Tacoma until it was closed in 1951. The name Issaquah comes from an Indian word meaning “place where game is found” or “a sharp point on the shoreline where fish can be taken”. In 1861, James Fenton built a small log cabin on present-day North Maple Street in what is now downtown Issaquah. Mr. Fenton became known for his products made from trapped wood –Log Cabin Blocks – which he sold along with his three wives and six children to support himself and his family during this time period. From 1862-1865, John Cramer ran a ferry service across Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue carrying passengers and materials needed for construction of new metropolitan areas in Puget Sound region such as Tacoma and Olympia (now central Washington). This company is recognized as one of the earliest transportation providers in town when it opened its doors for business on July 2nd, 1862 In 1865 John Cramer died suddenly leaving behind many businesses that continue operations today including: First National Bank building at 317 N Pennsylvania Ave., located today within view of Neumont Park; Pillsbury Doughnuts at 511 S Main St.; American Can Opener Company Building at 410 S Main St.; Harrods Department Store at 575 W Spokane Falls Blvd.; Harry Haggerty's Shoes store (now Whatcom County Fairgrounds) at 425 E Columbian Way; J & L Ford dealership (later Husky Tire) at 409 W Main Street; Harriman's grocery store (later anchor tenant - Safeway) also located adjacent to current day KGTV station site; current day Home Depot chain store located within sight of old post office property line
