He proceeded to build a small fort there which became known as Fort George during his occupancy; it served as an early outpost of American rule over what are now King County and Pierce County. In 1861, when Governor David Capps designated King County an area for military purposes due to its strategic location between Puget Sound andSeattle–the county seat–the original town site was abandoned for fear that it would be destroyed by soldiers going into battle against the Confederates then occupying Seattle. A few weeks later however Captain Charles Hennepin discovered coal seams in what would become downtown Issaquah while outfitting ships at Port Townsend on Orcas Island and decided to abandon his plans for a town here but built warehouses instead at what is now Pioneer Square which became home also to Stinson Beach next door soon afterwards (1863). However this did not mean that business or cultural activity stopped elsewhere within the newly established town limits – Revolutions Brewing Company was founded in 1865 by ISU graduate John Skinner along with partners John Day & Eugene Deasy – while landowner Amos Kendall developed properties just northeast of downtown including much of today's South Park Blocks c2010) Meanwhile back upstream where Discovery Bayou flows into Salmon River some 50 mi from Olympia another nascent community began forming about 40 miles upriver around 1 harbor called Nisqually: first established by members of The Dalles Trading Company under Captains Robert Simpson & Nathaniel Parsons about 1875 when they sailed downriver from Portland Harbor laden with goods bound for Mexico City via Yuma Crossing[4] On October 9th 1889 Vail Air Force Base opened up east side of Snohomish Valley just outside current Issaquah limits when USAAF First Lt Franklin J Roosevelt took off from NAS Whidbey Island shortly after 10am PDT intending fly over Mt Rainier National Park which he had learned earlier via ongoing news reports:[5] ensuing photos evidence show significant snow cover atop mountain making approach difficult even with large plane(s)… [6] today's airfield lies just inside current city limits across Skagit River
