Ferndale, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 10,872 at the 2000 census. Ferndale is located on the Spokane River and has a rich history as an agricultural center and home to shooting clubs and ranges dating back to 1892. The first shooting club in Ferndale was formed in 1892 by master craftsman George Redding. The first shooting range opened in 1903 and was used by local farmers for target practice. In 1925, the first modern gunshot noise reduction hearing protection device (GND) was developed in Ferndale and became commercially available to shooters in America. Today, there are over 1,600 shooting clubs across the United States that use GNDs to reduce recoil noise levels while practicing firearms safety skills or visiting gun shows or other events outdoors. Ferndale is a town in Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was named after General James K. Ferndale (1798-1864), who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as military governor of Oregon Territory. The first settler in what is now Ferndale was John Hargrave, who arrived in 1851. The first store opened in 1854 and the first school in 1856. The town was incorporated on October 3, 1862 by a vote of 7 to 5 with David Trainer as mayor. By 1870 it had a population of 350 people and an post office called "Ferrydale". In 1870 local farmers decided to plant wheat and barley instead of cotton because of high prices for that crop at that time; this led to growth for the post office and ferries which ran between Ferrydale and Everett until 1915 when ferry services were discontinued due to budget cuts by Washington state government. After World War II, Ferndale became an agricultural center with large production fields such as wheat, corn, soybeans, grapes, appleseeds and other fruits/vegetables grown on flat lands near Lagrange Crater Lake National Wildlife Refuge where ferries took passengers across the lake to see the wildlife during summer months In 1962 Paramount Pictures released "Dracula", based on Bram Stoker's novel; this movie helped lead to further development around Ferrydale while also attracting many tourists from neighboring communities including Seattle In 1984 Microsoft created its Redmond campus here followed by other major corporate headquarters over time In recent years there has been increased commercial development along Interstate 5 within walking distance of Ferrydale while also more housing developments built closer to Interstate 95

The first high school in Ferndale was built in 1909 and served as a high school from 1926 through 1959. In 1941, ferNDALE became part of the contiguous United States when it joined the Regional Plan Association (RPA). With its addition to RPA, ferNDALE became one of Washington's fifteen member jurisdictions within the National Park Service (NPS). As part of NPS' larger strategy to protect America's cultural heritage, ferNDALE has been designation as a Threatened Cultural Heritage Community since 1979. Since 1986, ferNDALE has been home to two annual summer festivals: The Arts Festival featuring art installations and demonstrations from local artists throughout August and September; andFerndaleFest which features music concerts and arts events throughout August-September
