Ferndale is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,449 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and home to most of the Ferndale School District. The first settlement in what is now Ferndale was called "Farmington" and it may have been established by Canadian fur traders in 1814. In 1820, John Laughlin moved his family to what is now Ferndale from farmsteads near Olympia. He built a log cabin on what today is Main Street and named it after his hometown of Alton, Illinois. In 1830, James McLoughlin founded McLoughlin & Company which became one of the largest landholders in this area. A cotton gin was built here in 1835 and ferments cottonseed oil into fabric for export from this location until 1865 when a steam-powered cotton gin replaced it. The first school in Ferndale was erected here about 1836 by Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Morse with help from Mr. Laughlin and other early settlers."

Ferndale is located on the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley and its main thoroughfare,optimizes for agriculture. The first Europeans to visit Ferndale were two men from Russia who were travelling through the area in 1847. In 1861, ferndale was incorporated as a city by an act of the Territorial Legislature. The city had been platted by Lorenzo Snow and James Wickersham under the name "Natchez." The name Burrard Bridge was chosen for its location across the Yakima River between Japanese American internment camps and downtown Ferndale. However, when ferndalese citizens voted in a referendum to become an independent city again in 1970 they reverted back to Burrard Bridge as their official name. In 1984, ferndale annexed part of Cashmere Boroughs east side which served as a rural bedroom community until 1995 when it became an urban district with jurisdiction over all of Cashmere except for one small sector that remained rural until 2000. That sector now lies within Elliott Township outside of Ferndale proper but still forms part of the municipal service area including schools and fire protection apparatus etc.. On July 1st 2002 ferdalese voters passed a non-binding resolution asking that their municipality be exempted from Initiative 502 - Measures intended to change how cities & towns functioning within county boundaries are elected & controlled - which would have made it difficult if not impossible for any other municipality within King County to follow suit & secede from county government effective January 1st 2003 thereby barring municipalities like Ferndale from providing services like water supply or streetlights while also imposing significant financial costs on each municipality seeking secession/ independence referendum ballots must contain signatures totaling at least 20% Of Membership To Be Valid

In 1852, George Worthy established the first store in what is now downtown Ferndale. A post office wasestablished at Ferndale on December 12, 1857, under the name of Anacortes. In 1861, when Ferndale became a town it had an population of only 235 people! In 1886 the University of Washington moved from Seattle to a new campus located near present day First Avenue Southwest and South Street Northeast (now Pioneer Square). This new campus required construction of several schools including those for girls which were built adjacent to the old Men’s High School site on Southeast First Avenue Northeast which still stands today as Oneida Hall. In 1907 there were 4 businesses with over $5,000 worth of merchandise located within one block (the current downtown area) of each other! By 1920 all but one business had closed due to competition from larger stores opening up along First Ave S., much like today! However, during this time period there also emerged some very active cultural institutions such as The American Museum of Natural History and The nearby Pacific Film Archive both founded by students at UW During World War II many factories closed down due to wartime production restrictions; however most ferndalesians continued their traditions like hosting country fairs throughout summertime until after the war ended In 1951 they held their annual drive thru festival which raised over $2200 For residents it providedmany opportunitiesto exhibit their skills direct to consumers utilizing local artisans
