Ferndale, Washington was founded in 1881 by John Ferndale and his family. The town is located on the banks of the Wenatchee River, about 25 miles northwest of Seattle. Ferndale became a major center for the rifle industry due to its location and availability of raw materials for manufacturing rifles. The town also played an important role in the Second World War, when Ferndale produced Bethlehem Steel Company's B-29 bombers. In recent years, Ferndale has been reborn as a small city with a growing technology sector. Ferndale is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Ferndale was Davidson McKay in 1851. He and his family built a log cabin on the current site of the old post office. McKay's son John took over running the business when his father died in 1875. In 1902, John's brother-in-law George Bender opened a bakery and grocery store on First Street east of Main Street. That same year, Bender donated land to build a high school which would later become Pioneer High School (now Ferndale Senior High School). In 1907, four brothers founded WSUF Radio Corporation which became KING Broadcasting Company with studios located on Union Avenue south of First Street. The first radio program aired from Ferndale was "Pioneer News" on October 15th, 1907. In 1916, Ferndale became an incorporated town with its own government including six precincts and three police officers responsible for all aspects of civil life within its boundaries - education, health care and public works. Residents continued to vote by referendum until 1920 when it became an unincorporated community under state law without any municipal powers or responsibilities except for taxes assessed against residents' property values
Ferndale was founded by George Washington in 1795 as a small trading post on the Snake River. The first store and post office were built here, and ferndale became a center for agricultural production and trade. In 1854, the town was renamed Ferndale after Edwin Ferris, an early settler. The local paper mill closed in the 1970s, but Ferndale has since regained its former prosperity as a bedroom community for Portland.
