Ferndale is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,916 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Ferndale is bordered by Lakeview to the east and north, Auburn to the west, and SeaTac Airport to the south. The first European settler in Ferndale was Nicholas Shockley who arrived in 1853. He named his tract of land "Ferndale," after a local tree that grew plentifully near his home. A post office was established at Ferndale on May 15, 1854, by Jno Purdy and later renamed Ferndale because of its location on what became State Highway 10 (now Interstate 5). In 1855-56 a schoolhouse was built at Ferndale for students from nearby Auburn. In 1861 a store opened at Ferndale which continued until 1865 when it closed due to lack of customers. A sawmill operated here until 1868 when it closed due to low demand for lumber from farmers in the area around Puget Sound. A millrace ran through downtown Ferndale between Cedar Street and Nowhere Road which served as an important water source for residents during dry times or during periods of high water levels caused by floods or landslides. The Millrace also provided access to Allen Park Reservoir to provide drinking water for residents throughout much of central Washington during droughts or other emergencies such as those experienced during World War II when Tacoma's tap resources were scarce because of military activity in that region. A frame courthouse was built in 1908–09 and replaced by a more permanent structure in 1912-13 following approval from King County Commissioners John Lantz and Mrs. James Fenton Miller jointly with two others commissioners; these were John Witherspoon (a farmer), Charles Eames (a contractor) and C D Beattie (an insurance agent). Plans drawn up by architect Edward Everett Hale suggested erection of an octagon courthouse with a court house annexe on each side extending back into . . .
