Ferndale is a small town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 955 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Ferndale College. Ferndale was founded by John Ferndale in 1847 as a farming community on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1870, work began on constructing the Transcontinental Railroad through Oregon and Ferndale became one of its original stations. A post office was established in 1871 and ferndale grew rapidly as a center for agricultural production and trade. By 1890, it had become an important commercial center with a population of 1,500. In 1912, Ferndale became part of what would be called "The Northwest", an area consisting of all U.S. states east of the Mississippi River that were not part of Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The following year saw another growth spurt as colleges and other educational institutions relocated to Ferndale from elsewhere in Oregon or Washington state. In 1920, ferry service between Portland and Seattle began operation; this permitted residents in both cities to have easy access to each other's markets without having to drive or take buses." During World War II, Ferndale played host to many military installations including Fort Lewis near present-day Tacoma, Washington; Boeing Airplane Factory No 2 at Everett Naval Shipyard; and Hale Field airfield just outside town limits serving Douglas Aircraft Company's P-40 Warhawk fighter plane program until 1945. In 1951, federal government acquisition guidelines changed which led to increased commercial development around town while also causing several stores downtown closed due to competition from new businesses opened within walking distance such as Name Drugs & More Store #1. The last store closed in 1984. In recent years much focus has been placed on revitalizing downtown areas such as developing new housing units along with increasing nightlife activity which has helped attract more people into town during daytime hours when most businesses are closed.
