By 1914, Ferndale had two churches (one Congregational and one Baptist), three hotels (one frame and two brick), nine stores (six general merchandise and five lumber/timber), eleven carpenters, fourteen agricultural businesses including seven poultry farms and six dairy operations; four banks; ten telephone companies; twelve schools (grades 1-12); sixteen residences: thirteen single family homes; one duplex; three multi-family dwellings In 1924 there were twenty-seven residents living in ferndale when it incorporated as a village under state law No. 9884 which stated "The Village shall have all powers vested therein by law without any reference to or connection with any other municipality." In 1933 ferndale annexed parcels of neighboring unincorporated areas of King County including Tumwater Valley Ranch which totaled . On July 17th 1934 an ordinance was passed creating a new city government with Mayor Elisha Firth as its first official head while all other governmental functions were exercised by Ferndale Township Council having five members out of nineteen total inhabitants at that time
Ferndale was founded in 1847 by General George Armstrong Custer, during the Indian Wars. The city’s first post office was established in 1850. Ferndale broadened its boundaries to include the towns of Lacey and Manson in 1853, and the town of Winthrop in 1863. It became a city on December 12, 1887.
