Ferndale is a town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,993 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is located on the north bank of the Willamette River. It was founded in 1872 by German immigrants, and it became an incorporated municipality in 1903. The history of Ferndale begins with its founder, Friedrich Wilhelm Kühnhausen, who arrived in Oregon from Germany in 1851. Kühnhausen erected a log cabin near what is now downtown Ferndale to provide shelter for his family during the harsh winter months. In 1872, he and his wife Anna set out to found what would become Ferndale as a small farming community that would offer goods and services to its surrounding farmers. After years of hard work and dedication to their new town, Kühnhausen and Anna were electedMayor and Councilmember respectively in 1903. Kühnhausen's original mill was destroyed by fire in 1904 but was rebuilt soon thereafter. The mill provided employment for many local residents until it closed down completely in 1966 due to economic decline. However, thanks to donations from supporters over the years, the mill has been restored and now functions as a museum open to the public annually. As one of only a few remaining German-owned businesses left in Oregon after World War II, Kühnhausen's store still offers unique products from his era including porcelain figurines manufactured by his son Franziska Kühnhausen-Weber from ferndalesturnershop@gmail.com
