Ferndale is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is the county seat of Thurston County. It is also home to the Ferndale Air Force Base and the largest employer in the town with over 1,700 employees. The name "Ferndale" originates from a white man's finding of a fur trading post on nearby Lake Union in 1847. The first permanent settlement in what would become Ferndale was made by Danish owners of an agricultural farm west of present-day downtown on Bainbridge Island in 1851. They named their farm Christiansborg (Church Farm). A post office was established at Christiansborg in 1853, and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1861, when King George I became Emperor of Austria-Hungary, he purchased land east of present day Ferndale from Danish farmers for $10 per acre ($ today). This area became known as "Erdrecht", or Erdricht after Emperor Franz Joseph's son Ernst von Erdrichthal (1827-1902), who had bought it from the original settlers. In 1886, about 25 percent of Ferndale's total population were Vulcan Indians living off reservation within city limits; they conducted subsistence farming using communal gardens and hunting/ Gathering techniques that included trapping small animals such as beavers and rodents with nets set out across open areas adjacent to ponds where they lived during winter months while fishing for salmon during summer months. On May 10th 1889 local voters passed an ordinance establishing separate village boundaries within each township which would eventually result in Ferndale becoming its own incorporated municipality on July 1st 1907 under charter number 9998 filed by Mayor J H Kerridge with Territorial Secretary J F Nichols! On October 15th 1914Ferndales first school opened doors with enrollment totaling 8 students! Mrs Lillie Shearer taught First grade for one year before her husband Dr John Shearer took over that role starting September 1915! For many years Mrs Shearer chaired our booster club which raised money for various good causes throughout our community including veterans' benefits fund donations to WWI vet hospitals then thru FOOD FOR Woundedemnity programs later……… Our library began operations Sept 1916 inside old Pheasant lumber yard location just southwest corner Of Main Street now occupied by Stonington Masonic Lodge #4

Ferndale was founded in 1847 by wagon train settlers. The town was named afterCaptain George Ferndale, who led the first wagon train to what is now Ferndale County. In 1881, the railroad arrived, and Ferndale became a booming commercial center. A new courthouse was built in 1909 and ferries were brought in to connect the various points of entry into the town. The ferries remain an important part of local life to this day.
