In 1969, Ferndale voters passed an ordinance establishing a school district with 15 schools serving grades pre-K through 12th grade as well as a high school for students 13 to 18 years old The first store opened in Ferndale on October 6, 1903 by Wm Hildebrandt with his family running it until 1905 when Hildebrandt's son Harry took over operations On July 4th 1907 another store opened by Wm Fenton named The Fenton Store which continued operation until 1914 On July 3rd 1912 another store opened by Geo Ladd named The Ladd Store which continued operation until 1915 In 1915 Jens Olsen started up his sporting goods business called Olsen's Sporting Goods that would remain open until 1984 . The next store owner was Prentice Young who operated it from 1916-1917 then bought it back from Olsen and reopened it as the Young Store from 1917-1920 before moving to their current location near the intersection of NW 7th Avenue and SE 99th Street in 1924 . In 1928 Gertrude Weisbrodt started her own clothing business called Weisbrodt's Clothing that would operate until 1986 In 1951 Stanislaus Barger started his gas station/convenience store called Barger's General Store that operated until 1987 When Barger died he left behind a large estate including several stores including Ferndales which continue operating today

Ferndale is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, with a population of 382 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and is located on Ferndale's eastern border with Bellevue. The ferndale region was first settled by pioneers in 1847 and became a town in 1861. In 1916, Ferndale became an incorporated city after being designated as such by Congress through the Homestead Act. The city was named for General John Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as commander of Union forces at Little Bighorn. The oldest settlement in Ferndale was established on what is now Northside Boulevard (later called First Street) near present-day Central Park east of downtown in 1847 by three men from Ohio: Jacob Harker, Isaac Buttram and Solomon Hubbard. They built a log cabin there and named it Fort Harker after General John Custer, who had been killed two years earlier during battle at Sand Creek when his unit attempted to retreat from that engagement under pressure from Indian attackers. In 1861, Ferndale became one of nineteen townships within King County when that county was created from parts of Tacoma and Olympia districts; it remained an unincorporated village until 1916 when it became an incorporated city under the Homestead Act following its annexation by Seattle. At that time, most people living within town limits worked on farms or outside the cities limits; however, some residents did move into greater Seattle because its infrastructure would allow them to do so without having to leave their homes or neighborhoods. This diversity has helped keep Ferndale economically active even during periods of rapid growth throughout much of its history while also providing opportunities for social interaction among its residents which continue to this day both inside and outside town boundaries
