After World War II ended it declined as demand for ferrochrome increased; however, it has since been revived with new investment into processing plants around town that produce steel products including fabricated metals products like fiberglass or plastic). Today many businesses are still based downtown including restaurants, cafes/cafes/bars/nightlife options (the newest addition being a mixed martial arts gym), gift shops/artisan boutiques/, art galleries (several existing since before Prohibition), two healthcare facilities (one hospital which provides services such as maternity care etc., and oneplex health center which offers primary care services) along with several schools - all within walking distance of each other makingFerndane one very active community! It lies on the east bank of the Columbia River, about northwest of Seattle and southeast of Spokane. The first Europeans to enter Ferndale were fur traders from Russia who established a trading post there in 1827. The name "Ferndale" was given to the settlement by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 when he visited what is now Ferndale and Point Defiance On April Fool's Day 1795, Vancouver named an area between Ferndale and Commercial Street after his friend and business associate Nathaniel Jarvis Ward. In 1854, when ferry service to Olympia began upriver from Tacoma, ferries operated daily between Ferndale and Olympia; but by 1861 this service had been discontinued because of rising costs associated with transportation improvements along the river corridor. In 1876, ferries once again transported passengers across the Columbia River between Seattle and Olympia; however this service also ceased due to lack of appropriations by Congress. In 1907–08 work began on construction of a new road bridge over the river which would connect Seattle with Puget Sound; however this project was abandoned due to financial difficulties incurred during World War I. The present-day ferries crossing the Columbia River were finally reinstated as passenger services following passage of legislation authorizing that in 1951 and allowing for two ferry crossings per day instead of one (the current configuration). Ferry service has continued intermittently ever since then until recently when it was suspended for several months due to high levels of water within Lock 12 on the tributary called Quinault River which forms part of Ferndale's border with Shorline Village on its west side
