Ferndale, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,041 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The name Ferndale comes from "Fernalda" meaning "forested place." The first settler in what is now Ferndale was James Fenimore Cooper who arrived in 1847. Ferndale has been inhabited by humans since at least the Clovis culture and up to 8,000 years ago according to archaeological evidence. One of the earliest mentions of Ferndale is on a map made in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver and it appears as "Feirandall". In 1827, Judge David Stevens patented land that would become Ferndale which included present-day Ferndale and parts of what are now Cheney and Kelso townships. In 1849, John Overholt organized a gristmill on the north side of town for the flour trade which became one of the largest businesses in town. In 1861 when Washoe County was created from Clark County, Ferndale became its capital. The first post office opened in 1865 and continued serving until 1907 when it moved to Spokane. During World War I there were shortages of food supplies so many people turned to farming as their primary source of income; this led to increased production in agricultural sectors such as corn, beans, potatoes and other grains during wartime times while also creating new jobs in allied munitions factories located elsewhere within Spokane or Tacoma.– fernderdaleheritageSociety
