Ferndale is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. Ferndale is known for its munitions plants and other manufacturing activities which have helped contribute to the city's nickname "The Arsenal of Democracy." The first permanent settler in Ferndale was John Couch who arrived in 1854. In 1855, two brothers named George and Amos Wright bought a tract of land north of present-day Ferndale from the Cushman family. The Wrights continued to farm there until 1872 when they sold their holdings to Moses Eaton for $4,000. Eaton became one of the largest landowners in town and built his home on what is now Fourth Avenue West. He also began leasing land to farmers for housing and light industry purposes. By 1870, Eaton had developed a millinery business that manufactured silk hosiery, lace handkerchiefs, bonnets and similar items. In 1876 he again leased land to farmer Isaac Wolkentin for an armaments plant called Wolkentin Arsenal which produced artillery projectiles and other munitions including shells used by both sides during the American Civil War (1861-65). In 1889 Eaton donated his estate to King County as countyhood expanded across Western Washington Territory into what is now King County; this made Ferndale one of the first county seat townships in Washington Territory. In 1905, Ferndale's phosphate operations were combined with those at nearby Bainbridge Island forming Bainbridge Phosphate Company Ltd.; this company later evolved into United States Phosphates Corporation which still operates out of Ferndale today as USP/ ferrochrome production facilities supplying world markets Today USP/Ferrochrome has been expanding its operations into new countries such as Peru through subsidiaries Peruvian Phosphates SRL & Interamerican Phosphates SRL And Ecuadorian Phosphates SA; these new ventures have brought significant economic development to the town while preserving much of its historic fabric While most residents continue living within walking distance or less than 1 mile (1 km) of their homes local factories continue producing products that help support their community economy Steel production continues today with production taking place at Three Rivers Armaments Incorporated where steel parts are fabricated onto rifles exported all over the world
