Ferndale is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 23,515 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. It is the county seat of King County. The name "Ferndale" comes from the Finnish word "fermi" meaning way or trail and "dal," meaning village or town. The first permanent settler in what would become Ferndale was David Capps in 1851. He built a log cabin on the rise above present-day Route 1A just east of downtown Ferndale and named it Purdy's Ferry after himself and his family's farm near Uniondale, New York. A few years later, he married Anna Maria Stevens, who had also come to America with her parents in 1849. Together they started a small store at first across from Purdy's Ferry on an undeveloped parcel of land that still stands today near Third Avenue South and Eastlake Boulevard North. In 1859, they moved their store to what would become their home at 9th Avenue South and Eastlake Boulevard North – now called Old Town Hall Place – which became their primary business center for many years until other more substantial businesses took over during prohibition times." In 1871 when ferris wheel company opened its new depot north of town on the site of present day CenturyLink Field (then known as Seattle Municipal Stadium), local entrepreneur John Denny bought 5 acres south of Purdy’s Ferry for $1120 cash plus 10% interest on each $100 worth of salesgenerated by ferris wheel operators within five miles radius." Denny soon invested in several larger ferris wheel companies operating out of these depots throughout central King County making Ferndale one of the most important cities in western Washington for transportation services." He also developed several industries including lumbering, brewing beer and selling soap products before dying suddenly at age 61 from natural causes in 1907." His widow continued operations until her death two years later." In 1912 she donated all her assets (including 6 acres located east along I-5) to Ferndale Community College which continues to operate as Ferndales Community College today." During prohibition time there were high levels of crime due to bootlegging activity taking place throughout much of western Washington; this led Mayor Harry Jennings Sr., ChairmanoftheKingCounty BoardofRegentstoestablishFerndaleminorityandpromoteeducationandeconomicdevelopmentinthecity". After repeal efforts failed he established a special revenue fund to subsidize liquor sales while creating jobs through tax collection." This program continues today with various applications filed annually with the state Liquor Authority seeking permission to sell wine/beer without paying excise taxes thus violating state law.) On July 15th 1920 memorializing Mr Denny’s contributionsTolocalcommunity& economya statuewas erectedatPurdy’sFerryonThursdasyear2000byMayorHarryJenningsSr.(nowStatePresident)&PlannerDaveHanson.(nowCity Councilmember)." Today this statue stands overlooking downtown Ferndale & can be seen from Interstate 5
The first settlers in Ferndale were James and Deborah Hargrave who came to the area in 1839. In 1841, John Nevin and his wife, Martha, started a farm on what is now Northeast Sixth Avenue. By 1865, the population of Ferndale had grown to over 100 people. The town's first school was built in 1872. The town's first bank was also founded that year. In 1901, the city of Seattle took over control of Ferndale from the farmers. In 1911, Gilbert Stroud bought most of the land in Ferndale south of Northwestern Street for $500. He named the property North Park after his son North Park Stroud (1881-1951). The city built a park there in 1923 and renamed it North Seattle Park after him in 1969. In 1951, Mayor Al Jolson organized a referendum to ask voters if they wanted to keep their small town character or move closer to larger cities like Seattle and Tacoma. Over 60 percent of the residents voted yes on moving into the larger cities butFerndale stayed small until 1978 when it annexed into King County as part of itslarger neighborstothenorthwest cornerofSeattle
