Ferndale is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,529 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Ferndale is located on the east bank of the Duwamish River, about south of Seattle and north of Tacoma. The first permanent European settlers were brothers Elias and John Day who arrived in 1853 from Illinois. They named their land "Ferndale" after their hometown, Ferndale, Michigan. In 1860, ferndale's first post office opened with three residents: A.D., Elmer & C.W.. By 1870 there were over 60 people living in Ferndale and it had a school house and a store run by Wm Blyth & Sons which closed around 1902 because of high water rates caused by construction on Lake Washington Ship Canal (later known as I-5). In 1892 Simeon Wheeler founded Wheelers Grain Elevator which became one of ferndales most important businesses until it went bankrupt in 1971 due to changes in world grain prices that impacted Northwest agriculture more than other parts of America. One night while Wheelers was bankruptcy proceedings were being held before creditors his son Solomon wheeled an old tractor into the courtroom on his father's behalf to show how much work he had done for the company during its long history - this story has been told many times but has never been verified historically beyond SolomonWheeler himselfs account In 1948 Frederick Engelbrecht purchased 80 acres (30 hectares) west of downtown from Jens Olsen for $2,500 cash plus 10% interest each year thereafter He established Engelbrecht Nursery& Botanical Gardens on what would become Engelbrecht Park which features botanical gardens including a rainforest nursery; extensive orchards with apple trees; deer proof fencing; playground; skating rink; ponds; butterfly garden; and Café Engelbrecht where refreshments are served . In 1957 he donated 100 acres (40 hectares) east side Of downtown to expand Engelbrecht Park to include community facilities such as library/community center/parking lot/recreational facility etc.; park now covers almost all eastern edge Of former city limits . Today Engelbrecht Park straddles both sides Of Duwamish River just east Of I-5 exit ramp An early form of transportation for ferndale was horse drawn wagons that transported goods upriver to Tacoma from points south including Olympia

The community of Ferndale grew slowly until it had a population of about 100 people by 1907 when the railroad came through and ferried goods and passengers to Portland. By 1922, there were only ten residents living in Ferndale; by 1990, that number had grown to over 150 people. The area around today's Ferndale was used for farming before railroads arrived. A sawmill operated here from 1871 until 1902 when the mill burned down due to fire suppression efforts by the local government. A flour mill was also built here but it closed down after just one year because of competition from larger mills located farther away. The last mill closed down in 1923 due to economic troubles and lack of demand for flour throughout much of America during that time period One highlight of earlyFerndale history was its annual Agricultural Fair which attracted attention from all over America because it featured new products from all over the world . From 1905 until 1966, Ferndales Agricultural Society ran an experimental farm near downtown where they grew crops including lettuce, peas, carrots and other vegetables not found anywhere else at that time One significant event that took place during this time frame happened on July 5th 1942 when more than 20 bombers flew into Seattle airspace dropping bombs on Japanese targets including Hiroshima and Nagasaki This bombing campaign known as World War II helped change how many people knew about what was happening across oceans
Ferndale is located in the state of Washington, and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years. The town was founded on the site of an earlier village called Ferndale, which was abandoned in 1846. The first post office was established in 1847. The town became a city in 1907, and annexed the neighboring town of Hayden in 1923. In 1950, Ferndale became part of the Seattle metropolitan area.
