In 1847, Major General George Abert acquired land within present day Federal Way limits and began developing what would become known as Abert Fieldstead Estate Park. This property included a large tract of forested land which served as both recreational grounds and artillery training ground during World War II. As part of his efforts to provide soldiers with improved optics equipment, General Abert purchased several hundred Winchester Repeating Arms Company rifles from American manufacturers in 1941. These rifles were used by military personnel throughout World War II in various operations such as Operation Neptune’s Spear and Battle of Okinawa. In addition, Abert donated these guns back into civilian hands following the war ended. This gift has helped contribute towards continuing education opportunities for individuals across Federal Way area today! The original town site included parts of today's neighborhoods of South Lake Union and Capitol Hill as well as buildings on Evergreen Avenue between State Route 606 and I-5; these structures still stand today within the boundaries of present dayFederalway . In 1916, construction began on Seattle–Tacoma International Airport which would later be renamed Sea-Tac Airport; this created much demand for residential development in nearby Tacoma which bordered on Interstate 5 at that time. By 1940, more than 20% of all housing stock in Tacoma had been built within blocks of Sea-Tac Airport with no end in sight; this made it difficult for residents to commute to their jobs in downtown Seattle or Tacoma proper without taking long trips down Interstate 5 or through rural areas bordering Puget Sound

This gave rise to plans to create a ring road around Federal Way with access from different parts of King County as well as Everett and Bothell to the north-west and south-east respectively. In 2006, voters rejected Measure 91A – an initiative proposing that part of Interstate 5 be dedicated exclusively to traffic improvements within Federal Way – after opposition from businesses near Interstate 5 Exit 116 (the current location of Safeco Field). In response, proponents of Initiative 502 began fundraising for another referendum campaign hoping to bring about change at the state level so that Federal Way could maintain its separate roadway system
In 1855, the first post office in Federal Way was opened. In 1898, the city of Federal Way became one of Washington's five cities. The name "Federal Way" originated from the fact that it was part of a land grant to John Fenton from King George IV.
