Federal Way is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 27,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. At first known as the "Village of Federal Way", it was founded in 1851 by petitioners from Tacoma and Suzzer Heights. The name was changed to Federal Way in 1903 after the federally constituted District of Columbia took over most of what had been Tacoma's territory. The city is located on Puget Sound between Bellevue and Redmond, bordered to the north by Seattle and to the east by Issaquah and Bothell. Interstate 5 runs through its downtown area; it has a MARTA rail station on Elliott Bay nearCtn Bldg., which opened in 2013. Federal Way is one of two cities (the other being Redmond) that were established as direct result of land purchases from Native Americans during both World Wars I and II. The purchase date for each city varies but all three were completed within 10 years after Congress approved legislation authorising appropriations for such purchases in 1920, 1922 and 1924 respectively.
