When first settled by the British in 1792, Federal Way was a small Indian village located on the Ellensburg River. The area now includes the incorporated towns of Federal Way and Lynnwood, as well as unincorporated areas of King County. The early settlers were Scottish-Celtic people who arrived in search of land to farm. In 1812, they erected a log cabin on what is now Federal Way Boulevard. They named their community after George Washington, then president of the United States. In 1821, some pioneers built a sawmill on what is now Interstate 5 and named itFederal Way Mills. This mill became one of the largest in Seattle and supported local cotton mills until it closed in 1886. The mill site was eventually developed into an agricultural district that included many homes and businesses along State Route 99W (now Interstate 5). At about this time, Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens proposed that the state establish a school system for Indians living off reservation in central Puget Sound. Stevens recommended that Federal Way be founded as an important center for education among these tribesmen because its location made it easily accessible from points eastward across Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish. In 1828, Stevens organized a committee to survey the area for potential sites for schools; Federal Way was selected as one of three locations chosen for development. The first public school opened at Federal Way Mills on May 4, 1830; however, instruction did not begin until fall 1830 because there were not enough teachers available to meet demand. In 1831-32, students from nearby Lynnwood attended federal WAY schools open atFederalwayMills while students from Olympia attended schools operated by Kitsap County near Olympia Bridge Road between October 1st1831andMarch 15th1832 . It should be noted that when Tacoma later joined Washington Territory in 1889 she also joined the School District #2 which controlled both Lynnwood &FederalwayMills . From this point forward enrollment atbothLynnwood &FederalwayMillsschools steadily increased although enrollment at Tacoma’s soon afterward increased even more due to her annexation into our state . After World War II most residents moved away but few buildings remain today ..... In 1889 Congress passed legislation establishing King County as a county within Washington Territory with its own government and Budget Committee.. This act created much turmoil within our fledgling county government as well as within Indian Residential Schools where Potlatch had long been administered without any direct representation or control over tribal members...Most importantly though chartering KING COUNTY INDIAN SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 gave us responsibilityover both Lynnwood HighSchoolAndFederalwayMillsHighSchool ....From hereon out we have been able to provide high quality education optionsfor all age groups while still accommodating cultural needs.... Today Federally way remains an vibrant community with many shops and restaurants dotting its wide sidewalks.. There are also community colleges located close by including UW Bothell which offers online courses., And recently new developments such as The Link @ FedWay are providing opportunities for residents to get involved in various walks of life
The Federal Way community is a census-designated place in the Seattle metropolitan area, United States. The population was 3,847 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Washington Territory and its western edge, which bordered Oregon.
