In 1978, the Gun Emporium merged with Seattle’s other firearm store, the Western Arms Corporation, to form one of Washington state’s largest gun retailers. However, over time Federal Way's economy has shifted from service industry to higher education and professional services; its low crime rate lends itself well to redevelopment efforts which have increased both residential density and commercial activity around its core neighborhoods since the early 2000s. In recent years there has been concerted effort by local officials (including Mayor Ed Murray) to revitalize portions of Federal Way’s eastern edge including Northgate Village (an outer ring neighborhood), Central District (a central business district), Southgate Center (southwest corner near Lake Union), Harborview Heights (northwest corner near Mercer Island), Capitol Hill (east side near Interstate 5), and University District (the westernmost section). This renewal effort has seen several new restaurants opened along with retail conversions such as an unsuccessful attempt by Amazon Web Services to open an office building within walking distance of Interstate 5;[1] increased spending on arts & culture venues such as The Stranger Brewery,[2] significant investments in public transportation like light rail systems[3],[4] new homes for people displaced by development projects,[5],[6],[7],[8]and plans for more library space.[9],[10]

The city of Federal Way is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington, United States. It occupies a large area on the eastern edge of the Central District and it was founded in 1858 by Captain George Vancouver as part of his exploration of the Pacific Northwest. The city has grown rapidly since then, and it now occupies over 100 square miles (240 km2) and has a population of over 150,000 residents. Federal Way's history can be traced back to its establishment as a town in 1858. At that time, Captain George Vancouver was exploring the Northwestern Territory and he decided to establish a new settlement near present-day Federal Way. He named the town after himself, choosing "Federation" because he hoped that it would symbolize an international alliance against British influence in the region. The first settler in Federated territory was John Goodrich, who arrived in March 1859. Federated territory was an area that had been donated by Washington state to become part of Washington following the Mexican-American War. In 1855, when Mexico withdrew from California and tried to reestablish itself within America, American settlers began flowing into California seeking land grants. Many Californians were not happy about this development and they lobbied forWashington state to give them similar rights as those granted to settlers in Oregon and Nevada. Accordingly, on July 24, 1855, Congress passed legislation authorizing Washington state to create federated territories with certain exceptions: those areas east of latitude 42° North were reserved for Oregon; those west of latitude 47° North were for Nevada; and any remaining lands were given to citizens from each respective colony without regard to race or color. This act created what is now called federalism – a system where different parts of America had their own government with specific powers defined by statute rather than by custom or agreement between individual people from each location. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Federal Way sided with Confederate forces over Union forces though it never fought directly alongside them – instead it Sheridan County served as headquarters for General Anson McClellan’s army until November 1862 when McClellan surrendered at Appomattox Court House after losing nearly all his supplies inside Richmond Virginia due to Confederate resistance (the largest battle ever fought outside New York City). Afterward Federated Territory became mostly rural with few urban developments until 1870 when Fenton Dam bottlenecked navigation on Interstate 5 cutting off one direction supply while allowing trade between Seattle and Tacoma via Ferndale which soon filled up again because there wasn’t enough water available upstream from Lake Pend Oreille . A meeting convened by Governor Isaac Stevens resulted in creating Lakeview Park which offered recreational opportunities including fishing/boating/swimming etc., but also led developers Glenwood Place & Denny Hill Developers proposing plans for million dollar homes overlooking I-5 spanning 3 acres suburban style shopping center with restaurants & theaters surrounded by high schools & colleges
