In recent years, federal funding for transportation projects has been key to keeping Federal Way thriving with various initiatives such as streetcars running down First Avenue SW from downtownSeattle to Pioneer Square; light rail running through much of centralFederal Way; new parks including Ballard Park south of Interstate 5 near Safeco Field; and renovations/updates to several large municipal buildings like City Hall that have helped contribute to the increase in economic development aroundFederwayoverthelastdecade or so. The Federal Way National Historic District encompasses a tract of land in the Seattle metropolitan area that was administered as part of the general area now known as King County until it was added to the national park system in 1916.
