Federal Way is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue– Federal Way Combined Statistical Area. The first human settlement in what is now Federal Way was made on November 6, 1851 when a party of men and women from neighboring towns set out for Gold Rush country in search of gold nuggets. They met with no success but returned two days later with 4 kilograms (10 pounds) of gold medals and $2 worth of goods. This initial discovery led to the naming by one man of what would become Federal Way after General George Custer's last stand against Indians at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. In 1885, a group of businessmen organized as the "Federal Way Improvement Company" bought 2,000 acres (800 hectares) east of present day Federal Way and developed it into what is now an area that includes much commercial activity including restaurants, stores and office buildings today. The company name was changed to Boeing in 1916 because the company had been founded by Boeing brothers Alfred and Reuben Boeing who were working on building some new types of planes at their Seattle factory when they came across reports about an Indian reservation near Moses Lake which had recently been purchased by Boeing for $5 million dollars (£3 million). After more than 40 years as a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines Inc., Northwest Airlines Corporation (NWA) merged with Delta on October 1, 1996 creating the largest airline merger in history when both airlines owned 70% eachof their respective stockholdings. In order to maintain antitrust laws forbidding any single airline from dominating all aspects of American aviation manufacturing - including service - NWA divided its stock among its constituent airlines while maintaining control over its maintenance hangar facilities so that each airline could operate independently under one roof should there be any problems with airworthiness or customer service within one particular carrier fleet. However this arrangement did not last long as Northwest Airlines Corporation went bankrupt in 2001 due to weak demand for its products and then sold its assets to Alaska Airlines Corp for $145 million (£79 million). Asiana Airlines Group Co., Ltd.,Southwest Air Lines Co., LLCand United Express Corp.(UAL),the four surviving original subsidiaries from NWA's collapse announced plans to merge their operations under one umbrella starting on February 1st 2006 but these plans were abandoned after United ExpressCorp failed to secure regulatory approval for such a large merger following allegations that certain employees homosexual relations constituted discrimination against female passengers within their own corporation. On September 15th 2007 United ExpressCorp successfully completed a hostile takeover bid[1] giving them full ownership over all four subsidiaries making them effectively brand new companies once again - AALCO Holdings Co,. Ltd.,United Continental Holdings Incorporated(UCH),Alaska Airlines Group Co,. Ltd.) Aralco Holdings Co,. Federal Way is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 25,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The land that makes up Federal Way was first claimed by Chief Seattle in 1792 as part of his claim to Northwestland, which included all of what is nowWashington state and most of Oregon. In 1851, Congress created King County from parts of Puget Sound Territory and two other counties – Thurston and Kitsap – within Federal Way City Limits. At that time, Federal Way consisted largely of open fields and forested hills surrounding a small town named Federal Way Junction on Lakewood Boulevard east of Interstate 5 near CenturyLink Field Airport. In 1907, a group led by millionaire industrialist James Wickersham donated land to build what would become Northgate Mall on surface streets between First Avenue NE and Eastlake Avenue NE in north-central Federal Way under the name "Northgate." mall opened in 1912 with anchors JCPenney, Sears & Roebuck, Macy's and Richfield Chevrolet among others. Facing competition from larger shopping centers across King County, Wickersham closed Northgate Mall in 1978 after only five years due to low sales levels; it reopened as an annex for Southcenter mall nearby three years later but eventually closed again in 1990 due to heavy economic decline along with other malls throughout central Washington which had lost theiruticence to compete with new developments or be replaced by suburban ones. On January 1, 2009 voters passed Proposition 99 (the "Federal Way Initiative"), authorizing Mayor Greg Nickels to establish a city government for FederalWay including powers over public works such as building streetlights etc., fire departments etc., zoning changes etc., financing authority for public projects etc.; Nickels took office on January 3rd following passage by City Council resolution expressing support for his candidacy On July 8th 2013 Nickels announced he will not seek re-election next year after more than 20 years as mayor
The Federal Way Bridge was built in 1920. The current bridge is the third and longest in the area.
