Captain Vancouver's successor, Commodore James Cook sailed into Puget Sound on July 17th, 1811 on HMS Discovery and discovered what would become known as Elliott Bay which lay between present day Tacoma and Seattle proper. Cook named this bay for Captain Alexander Everett who had lost his ship while exploring this area two years earlier while searching for a Northwest Passage route to China or India (the Admiralty report did not mention anything about vessels). This naming event helped set off a period of growth for Everett which reached its peak during the late 19th century with an estimated population of 10,000 people before declining rapidly due to immigration from Canada and elsewhere during World War I then returning Boom-time resident values only slightly over 4500 people by 1990 levels – allcommunity businesses employing 46% workers local jobs only 8%. However since then numbers have begun slowly creeping back up again thanks especially to recent annexation of much larger neighboring municipalities such as Des Moines sister city Steilacoom WA adding 5K residents/year over last 3 decades! today’s population: 7992
