His party reached Olympia on November 3rd and camped at Whatcom Creek until December 6th when they started up Devils Fork to prospect for gold near Clearwater Lake. They arrived at Elliott Bay early on January 2nd after spending three weeks exploring what became known as Stevens Pass. On January 10th, 1859, John Stevens wagon train was attacked by Indians from the Yakima Nation while traveling through what is now King County along I-5 south of today'sverett junction of Interstate 5 and State Route 99W A battle ensued during which five men were killed including Stevens himself One account claims that one of the attackers may have been Native American scout named George Custer who had recently lost his father to Indian captivity Aftermath of attack led to increased tensions between whites and natives throughout much of Northwest Territory
