Enumclaw is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1887 by J.D. Enumclaw and Wm. Henson as a log drive for cattle on the Great Lakes shoreline east of Tacoma. The first post office in Enumclaw was established in 1893, and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1903, the town had just over 100 residents; by 1905, it had grown to over 400 with a population of 1,200+. By 1910, Enumclaw had reached 2,000 residents and became an incorporated city under the name Tacoma City Limits; it lost this status upon its annexation by Seattle in 1912. In 1955-1956, construction began on what would become Safeco Field; when completed two years later (in 1959), it was one of the most important landmarks in Seattle–Tacoma history. After playing host to some of North America's top baseball teams during its early years (including Babe Ruth's Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers), Safeco Field fell out of favor during the late 1960s and 1970s as attendance decreased markedly throughout Seahawks ownership/management—despite efforts by Mayor Ed Murray to revive interest in baseball among locals through various promotional initiatives (e.g.,raising awareness about local art exhibits taking place at nearby Lake Union). In 1984-1985, then-Mayor Norm Rice announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns but offered his support to future mayors should they choose such a path—a policy which led to increased public opposition against him within Seahawks management shortly thereafter). The islands are located about 12 miles east of Seattle on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In 1856, the town acquired land to the south for $1,000 from Colonel George Vancouver. The first school in Enumclaw was built in 1857. In 1865, a sawmill was built and operated until 1907. As a result of its location along Puget Sound and its close proximity to Seattle, Enumclaw became an important center for trade and transportation during the late 19th century. In 1922, when Washington statehood came into being, Enumclaw became one of its first cities. In 1945-46, during World War II, Enumclaw played an important role as a military base which housed troops engaged in naval warfare against Japan
