In 1882, a post office called Enumclaw was established; it operated from 1882 to 1915. In 1907, the town incorporated and saw its first growth when it annexed portions of the neighboring towns of Ballard and Everett. In 1959, Enumclaw became an annexe for what is now Bothell in King County; this annexation has resulted in much growth over time as both communities have become more intertwined with one another culturally and economically. On January 1, 1961, Enumclaw joined Bothell as a city. At that time, it had a population of about 507 people. That number exploded by 1970 when annexations into other counties continued apace; by 1980 Enumclaw had reached 2,034 people. By 2000 however crime rates were on the rise and annexations stopped entirely; according to 2000 Census data only 810 residents remained within city boundaries (of which 585 lived within annexation limits). However due to recent economic development surrounding Interstate 5 and new construction around University Place Mall & CenturyLink Field there has been resurgent growth back into city boundaries with a population of 1,811 as of 2010
