In 1911, lumberjacks discovered coal seams near what would become downtown Enumclaw and began investing in mining properties; this led to thetown's growth over time as businesses developed around coalmining activity such as mills, groceries, hotels and other services needed during those days when logging had farmed most of King County’s acreage. By 1916 almost all commercial development within walking distance of downtown had stopped because of high prices for coal dust (and later other minerals) brought about by World War I technology advances that allowed European companies like British Coal Trading Ltd., Anglo American plc., United States Steel Corporation (USSC), Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CP) etc.) to produce oil products cheaply at home while taking little or noland elsewhere; these developments were also contributing factors leading up to “the Great Depression” that swept America during early 1920s). In 1944 construction began on what would become Tacoma Municipal Court Annex #2 which became home for courtrooms used by both King County Superior Courts (#3 through #9) as well as Pierce County Superior Courts (#10 through #14).
