The town site was first settled by Yakima and Puget Sound tribes in 1847. The CDP is located on both sides of Interstate 5 between Cheney and Lynnwood stations in north-central Washington State; it borders Cheney to the south and east, Lynnwood to the north, and Moses Lake to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Enumclaw has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people residing in the CDP: 870 households out of which 38% had children under age 18 living with them, 62% were married couples living together, 6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 21% of all households were made up of individuals and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The first post office opened in 1848. In 1908, the town of Enumclaw and its environs were merged into the newly created city of Seattle. In 1959, the City of Seattle annexed all but 1 square mile (0.8 km²) of what are now parts ofEnumclaw and renamed it Pioneer Square.
