Enumclaw is a small community in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, about an hour's drive from Seattle. It was founded in 1879 by men who arrived from what is now British Columbia on the recommendation of Captain John McLoughlin. The first post office was established here in 1881. Enumclaw has a population of about 375 and is located on the banks of the Enumclaw River. It lies within King County, Washington. The first settler in what is now Enumclaw was George Sibley, who arrived in 1879. He built a log cabin on land he owned near where today's town stands. Sibley named his community after his home province of Canada, Enummahgwadon (now Edmonton). A post office was established at Enummahgwadon and mail was delivered here until 1886 when it moved to nearby Snohomish County. In 1888, Hilo Ladd purchased some land east of town and began erecting a sawmill which became known as "Ladd's Mill." In 1893, Ladd donated some additional land to make way for a shopping center which remains today as part of the town square. The mill closed in 1955 but its legacy lives on through local industry including agricultural production and retail businesses that operate inside and outside the town square today. Today, many people living in Enumclaw are descended from those who worked at Ladd's Mill or else were born and raised hereabouts during its heyday. One popular local childhood memory involves playing catch on one of the millhands' patios overlooking the river while families gathered around to watch children race across the watermelon-sized patches available for catching with long poles! Enumclaw is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Enumclaw-Spokane metropolitan area. The name is derived from the local language, enuwálk (meaning "place where lilies grow"). The first permanent settler in what would become Enumclaw was William Horsfall in 1856. Horsfall arrived with his family from Vermont. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Columbia River about two miles west of present day Enumclaw on land claimed by both he and his brother, John Horsfall. By 1857, John had also landed here and started a cattle ranch that grew into one of the largest and most successful in Western Washington. In 1861, when Washoe County was established, portions - including Enumclaw - were included within it as part of what became Spokane County. In 1911, Spokane County merged with King County to form Puget Sound Area Authority; however, much of eastern King County remained separate until 1959 when that area was combined with Seattle to form Duwamish and Tukwila Counties. Eastern half of Spokane County constituted Yakima Valley which remains today's location for only a small percentage of its population while much more than than half resides in neighboringKing and Puget Sound Areas outside those areas' jurisdiction limits The first post office at Enumclaw opened on December 12th, 1890 under name Harmony but changed its name to Spokane on January 6th 1897 due to then-governor George Ball's effort to improve postal service between Yakima Valley and Olympia In 1912 residents voted 2-1 against incorporation into either King or Puget Sound Areas due to concerns over annexation by other municipalities without their consent; however incorporation did occur on October 10th 1913 after voters approved an act authorizing it by an overwhelming margin That same year saw construction commence on what would become Brockton Elementary School across from modern day Pioneer High School – one of four Gradeschools operated municipally throughout those years within City Limits during an era before public education laws were fully developed .
