The first permanent settler in what is now Enumclaw was John Chapman in 1824. The town name comes from the local river, Enum Creek. In 1852, George Stephenson built a canal through Enum Creek and named it after his friend and neighbor Dr. George Stephenson (1775-1864). In 1865, when Congress designated King County as an agricultural district for the Yakima Valley region, they created four towns within that district: Enumclaw among them. That year also saw the opening of Puget Sound Branch Railroad to Everett and Thurston counties; this helped spur development around Seattle and Tacoma. By 1910, there were 905 people living in Enumclaw with a total businesses of $1 million; by 1970 it had shrunk to 536 people with 268 businesses with a total value of only $100 million! But even during these tough times there has been occasional growth – not least due to new technology becoming available which has led to increased job opportunities in many areas including information technology and new manufacturing ventures like computer printers and scanners! By 1850 there were 2 buildings standing but no residents living here because noroads had yet been constructed thru this remote area so wagon travel was required for goods being transported here from other parts of King county . In 1865 when Congress designate King County as an agricultural district for the Yakima Valley region they created 4 towns within that district called "enumsclaw" among them . Enumclaw is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 476 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The Town of Enumclaw was organized on October 6, 1883 from portions of the towns of Redmond and Spokane. The first Post Office was established in 1885. The present town hall was built in 1907 and enlarged in 1978. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where many men gather." In 1855, Chief Joseph married a woman from Enumclaw named Elizabeth McClellan. They had six children and one daughter died young; her husband raised them all with his own two hands until their mother's death in 1861 when he became head chief of the Yakama Nation. In 1907, Enumclaw residents decided to apply for incorporation as a municipality within the City of Seattle. On May 7, 1909 they were granted incorporation and began to build their first homes on what is now Main Street. By 1912, they had erected a $5 per capita tax assessment that supported public schools and fire department; by 1916 it had increased to $10 per capita and provided health care for the community through its own hospital committee which also operated an ambulance service between Tacoma and Everett during World War I (itself started as a reaction to Tacoma's lack of medical services). In 1925 Enumclaw annexed Browne Lake as part of its borders but retained its separate school board until 1954 when it merged with Bellingham School District #1 (later renamed King County School District #2). In 1970 however, annexation back into Thurston County occurred after voters approved Measure U which would have created King County along with Pierce County east of Interstate 5 (the current daySnohomish County). With no other municipalities withinSeattle limits bordering areas including Snohomish or Alki Counties -Enumclaw's annexation came about because it lay just outside city boundaries on both sides of I-5! WhenKing county formed due to US statehood there wasn't anything stoppingEnumclaw from joining too-making it easy for newcomers like myself who only wanted our little town included not feeling like we were being left out
