The first permanent settlers in what would become Enumclaw were Peter and Margrietten Heitman in 1853. They named their new land "Westminster" after London's Westminster Abbey. In 1885 the name was changed to Enumclaw because of its location outside of Seattle on Puget Sound. A post office was established at Enumclaw in 1907 and remained operational until it closed in 1951. In 1959, Congress passed an act designating the town of Enumclaw as an official seat for the county of King County. The town charter was approved by King County voters on November 5, 1959; and enfranchisement took effect on January 1, 1960. According to the 2002 US Census Bureau, there are 2,624 people living in Enumclaw who identify as American Indian or Alaska Native; 172 white non-Hispanic residents; and 608 black non-Hispanic residents (1%. There are no Hispanic residents living within the limits of Enumclaw). Most visibly Native American are those who identify as Hopi (8%). Non-Native individuals make up 26% of the population while 25% are international students from countries such as Japan or Korea seeking study opportunities in Washinton DC or other parts of America; 6% consider themselves “other” races before answering questions about race/ethnicity online or through interviews; 10% self-identify with a specific gender identity which does not match that assigned at birth according to federal government statistics (these percentages could rise if respondents choose not to answer certain questions about their racial identity). As stated previously: “Nonnative” individuals account for most (>75%) native speakers among all community members studied herein—reflecting both precontact populations and current trends within this typically rural based group’s cultural identification” (Goudreau 2016b).

Enumclaw, Washington is an unincorporated town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. It was founded in 1851 by the brothers Moses and Stephen Enumclaw. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of Thurston County and is northwest of Olympia. The first settler in what is now Enumclaw was Moses Enumclaw who arrived in 1851 from Scotland. He named his new settlement after himself and his brother Stephen. In 1865, a post office was established at Enumclaw with Josephine as its name. By 1870, the population had grown to 2 people and a school had been built. The town never reached its full potential due to lack of resources and competition from neighboring towns such as Olympia. However, it still remains an important part of Thurston County history due to its role in early logging and farming communities during the late 19th century. Today, there are few remaining buildings from the original settlements except for a few farmhouses that remain standing along State Route 10A which runs through Enumclaw’s center (the old road). Most notable surviving structures include: the Masonic Lodge (1871), John Ahern’s Store (1872), Community Church (1901-2002), Griggs School Annex (1910-1920) & Gorman House(1915). In 1969, when Thurston County became part of Kitsap County,[1] Enumclaw ceased to exist as a separate municipality but continued to be legally recognized as part of Kitsap County until its dissolution on January 1st 2020.[2] During much of its history, Enumarclaw has been home to many local farmers who cultivated crops such as potatoes and apples; livestock husbandry included dairy animals such as cows and pigs;[3] some homes still stand today that were used for various purposes including storage or rental over time period including: Griggs School Annex (now an art museum), John Ahern's Store(now a restaurant), Masonic Lodge(now owned by Washtenaw Mountain Brewery)[4], & Community Church(now leased by Yakima Valley Arts).[5]
In 1853, the U.S. territory of Washington was admitted to the Union as a new state. The area that is now Enumclaw was part of what was then Okanogan County. In 1861, when Washington became a U.S. Territory, it included all of present-day Puget Sound except for the city of Seattle and much of Vancouver Island including most of what is now Bellevue and some parts of Auburn and Bothell counties. In 1889, Okanogan County was created from part of Pierce County in what is now King County and Enumclaw became its county seat. The first courthouse in Enumclaw was built in 1892 on Third Avenue between Estevens Street and Mercer Street.
