In 1924, afterename changes were instituted due to General Leonard Wood's death: the town became simply called "Leonard Wood". According to census data collected between 2000 and 2010, Enumclaw has seen significant growth over the past few decades - doubling its population since 1990 while remaining largely stable across racial groups and income levels (though there has been some turnover among residents). There are now more than 2dozen businesses located within its borders - including several small UPS stores - as well as two high school campuses (enrollment reaching 9700 students) and one adult education center ( enrolling students ranging fromBeginnings through college degrees). Enumclaw is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,390 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1885 as Enumclaw Lake and post office. In 1907 it changed its name to Enumclaw after the local enums (a type of tree) that were used for postal purposes. The community's first school opened in 1912 and was housed in a log cabin on the banks of the lake. A new school building was constructed in 1917 and still stands today. In 1923, when Seattle-Tacoma Railway began freight service through the town, residents decided to build a depot on their property to serve as an interchange for trains coming into and out of Seattle. The depot served as a stop on various passenger trains until 1959 when Amtrak took over operations from the Tacoma Railroad Company. In 1955, Enumclaw voters passed a resolution ratifying Cascade Lumber Company's purchase of land east of town from Everett Timbermen for $1 million – which would eventually form the nucleus of what is now Bellevue-Everett . The company built a large mill there that remain operational until today. Cascade also developed other mills across King County including Oso Mill in Moses Lake and Tenino Mill near Federal Way

The first settlers in the area were fur traders and travelers who came to Puget Sound in 1853. They named their new community Enumclaw (meaning "place where there are many beaver") after a nearby beaver pond. In 1865, miners discovered coal here and began construction of one of the largest mines in North America on land leased from the federal government. The mine produced over two million tons of coal until it closed in 1911. In 1912, Enumclaw voters passed a resolution ratifying the merger of Snohomish County and King County; this created Seattle as a separate city with its own mayor and council members. On December 15, 1912, local merchant Arent Huyler donated 4 acres (1 hectare) adjacent to what is now First Avenue South to make way for an enlarged courthouse and jail which would eventually house both King County Courthouse and Superior Court building when they were completed late in 1913–14. The town was incorporated on February 5, 1914; by then it had a population of 710 residents (). A smallpox epidemic struck Enumclaw during World War I; however, no cases were reported within the town or withinKing county until 1915 due to poor public health conditions caused by lack of medical supplies available during that war years shortages brought about by wartime rationing programs initiated by President Woodrow Wilson soon after he took office in 1916/. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2 1945, most Americans returned home but some stayed behind for whatever reasons such as trying to rebuild post-war societies or seeking new opportunities as postwar communities sprung up all over the country including aroundSeattle such as Kirkland which had become an industrial center following Boeing's establishment there forty years earlier On April 1 1957 – just shy of 50 years since incorporation – Enumclaw voted by majority against annexing neighbouring Redmond into their community despite strong opposition from that community’s leadership including Mayor Tom Rasmussen who characterized annexation as “an act unilaterally taken without consensus from our citizens” ; annexation instead occurred three months later effective July 1 1957 under then newly formed King County .
