On Dec. 5, 1892, the Washington Territorial Legislature passed an act to create the Enumclaw Rifle and Pistol Club in response to a group of local farmers’ demand for a gun club. The club was chartered on Feb. 3, 1893, with $5 per member and initial membership numbered at 25. In 1903-1904, the club constructed its first clubhouse on land donated by J.F. Hennessey in nearby Enumclaw Township. On Nov. 10, 1904, the club adopted its current name - the Washington rifle and pistol society - after being accepted into The American Rifle Association (TARSA). The Washington rifle and pistol society is one of only two rifle clubs in the United States that still retains full organizational control over its members through annual dues payments and elections; other clubs are typically subordinate to national organizations such as USA Rifles or NATO Rifles respectively.
Enumclaw is a census-designated place in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. It is home to the Enumclaw Indian Reservation and the Enumclaw Correctional Facility. The area now known as Enumclaw was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European settlers were French fur traders who named it La Grande Prairie de la Madeleine after their temporary discovery of fertile land there in 1792. They abandoned their enterprise soon after because of competition from British fur traders. In 1854, US soldiers burned down some buildings on what is now Fort Snelling Creek during an Indian uprising against American forces that had been planned by Chief Josepha Stevens and her husband Major Isaac Stevens; this event is also generally considered to have started the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876). The town began to take form around this time, with many houses being built along Snake River east of present day Wallingford Road. In 1872, when Gold Rush miners discovered gold near present day Enumclaw, businessmen among those who invested in mining operations quickly developed a town with several blocks bounded by MLK Way NW to NE, First Avenue NE to SW, Northeast Ridge Road SE to NW and Vulcan Street SE to WEST. The mines closed during World War II but revived in the early 1960s as local farmers turned toward growing crops for local consumption rather than export markets; however they all came to an end by 1973 due primarily to environmental problems caused by overgrazing on nearby grazing lands and overpumping groundwater resulting from increased development within walking distance of mines dating back centuriesASSOCIATED PRESS/SEATTLEPIERRE HOOD A new mine has opened up just outside our community recently calledthe Copper King and it will be bringing jobs right here into our small town so we can start fresh again! Enumclaw is a small town in King County, Washington and is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Enumclaw Indian Reservation. The first settler in what would become Enumclaw was George Vancouver in 1851. At that time, it was part of the Clark Fork Valley region and had a population of around 100 people. In 1865, rancher John Troup set up shop in what is now known as Chavez Ravine and began to clear land for his ranch. By 1870, he’d acquired over 6,000 acres (2 km²) and built four houses on it – one still stands today. In 1892, lumberman James Prentice bought 640 acres (248 ha) north of present day Chavez Ravine from Troup for $10 per acre ($/ha). He named this new tract “Prentice Land” after himself and started Clearwater Lumber Company thereon. Today, Enumclaw retains its name though most locals refer to themselves simply as “Enumclawites” or “the community”. In 1906, whenKing County was added to Washington State, Enumclaw became its capital city under the leadership of Governor Isaac Stevens. That year saw an influx of settlers as word spread about good land waiting to be developed in the newly created county seat – which soon became known as Seattle proper! After years of growth and development throughout various eras including post-World War II boom times until 2000s recession (see chart), Enumclawians have seen their median household income rise by 38% since 2000 while their poverty rate has decreased by 12%. Despite these positive trends however housing prices continue to increase at an alarming rate relative to market rates – pushing many residents out into neighboring townships or rural areas where access to affordable homes remains difficult or non-existent!
The first European to visit the area now known as Washington was Capt. John16 Wurtz in 1799. The area became part of the United States in 1847 and was named for George Washington, who had died two years earlier. The population of Enumclaw reached 10,000 by 1870 and remained relatively stable until the early 20th century when it began to decrease due to immigration and other factors. In 1931, the population of Enumclaw was reduced to 5,000 by an act of Congress which established the town of Enumclaw within what is now King County.
