Some of Enumclaw's unique features include its fire station (which still stands), its post office (now closed), its two churches (one Roman Catholic and one Protestant) as well as several small businesses including a grocery store and bank account services provider. As an incorporated municipality, Enum Claw also voted to annex neighboring communities such as Sumner in 1978 and Mercer Island in 1986; however these annexations were not accepted by all residents because they did not provide more services or accommodate different demographics than those already living within the limits of the original Village formed by vote). It was named for John A. Enumclaw, Jr., a rancher and local politician who served as governor of Washington from 1959 to 1961 and 1967 to 1969. The first settlers in what is now Enumclaw were farmers who had come overland from British Columbia in 1851. In 1864, someone donated land to the town so that it could be established as a post office. In 1870, residents voted to name the town after John A. Enumclaw Jr., then-governor of Washington. When he died in 1961, his heirs decided that they would prefer not to have their namesake's name associated with the town any longer so they changed it to Enumclaw National Forest in his memory. Enumclaw has experienced several ups and downs during its history; however, most notably during World War II when many local businesses became involved in supplying food for military camps throughout North America. After the war ended, many locals left for different reasons or returned home; however, some stayed behind and started new businesses such as hotels and grocery stores which continue today despite being surrounded by forestland once again. One significant event that took place in Enumclaw occurred on September 11th 2001 when hijacked planes crashed into Twin Towers near New York City; this led to an increased amount of activity around the area due to fears of another terrorist attack similar to Septembre 7th 2001 which killed 3 thousands people outside Los Angeles airport (the same day as 9/11). Some residents still live within close proximity of both towers today since there are no active threats reported against either building since then!
The Enumclaw Indian Reservation was established in 1847 by the United States government after a treaty with the traditional leaders of the area, the Jicarilla Apache. The reservation included present-day Seattle and portions of what is now Tacoma. It was formally organized in 1853 and named for Major General George A. Washington, as part of a larger effort to gain land for Native Americans throughout the Northwest Territory.
