firearms and the history of Enumclaw, Washington date back to 1866 when President Andrew Johnson announced that the United States would recognize the MexicanRepublic as a nation. This led to several skirmishes between American and Mexican forces over control of the town. The first firearm in Enumclaw was an old muzzleloader that was used by local farmers to hunt game. In 1876, two years after Mexico became a republic, American soldiers invaded Enumclaw to overthrow its government. A gunbattle ensued and one American soldier was killed while another retreated with his wound sustained in combat. The Americans called this event “The Battle of Fort Pickett” because General George Buell had garrisoned Fort Pickett on Vancouver Island at that time. In 1903, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which made it illegal to possess any weapon without a license from the federal government. This act also regulated magazine sizes, type of ammunition and other aspects of firearms regulations. After World War I raged across America, many people turned their attention towards arms manufacturing in order to support their country during wartime efforts. By 1923, Enumclaw had become home to Seattle-based Armsbury Arsenal where rifles, pistols and shotguns were manufactured for both domestic and export use. During Prohibition years (1937-1941), weapons production at Armsbury expanded again as bootleggers indulged in smuggling alcohol into America through Canada instead of getting it from abroadvia shipping containers or trains imported from Europe or South America.(1) After World War II ended, most American manufacturers closed their plants except for those located within 10 miles of Washington D.C.. However, some companies managed to stay afloat by moving production outEast into states such as New York City and Newark NJ.(2) Beginning in 1965, Gun Digest Inc., owner of Seattle-based Wigwam Ammunition Manufacturing Co., moved its operations outside of Washington state altogether under new ownership(3) . At this point there were only three firearm manufacturer left inEnumclaw: Gun Digest/Wigwam Ammo Manufacturing Co., Smith & Wesson Axminster Armory Company (now Smith & Wesson M&P Centerfire Pistolarms Group)and Springfield Armory(4). All three companies still operate inEnumnhow but have different product lines now due mainly to competition from Walther AG’s Ruger handguns.(5) Since enactment of the Brady Bill (1989), efforts have been made by law enforcement officials throughout the United Statesto reduce shootings on school campuses due not only to fear that these incidents could result in mass casualties but also because schools are considered places where personal firearms can be legally possessed.(6) To date no fatalities have resulted from shootings involving firearms at Umpqua Community College outside Salem OR; however there have been multiple injuries including one assailant who entered campus with a rifle before shooting victims who objected)(7) The proliferationof assault rifles has caused concern among some lawmakers about potential misuseof these weapons by criminals(8). Ford Motor Company has donated $100 million towards gun control initiatives since 1995(9). Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department is currently working on a program that provides free handgun trainingfor county jail inmates[10] .

Enumclaw is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lakewood- enumclaw-Pasco Combined Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Yakima County was Jedediah Smith in 1807 during his expedition westward from Astoria, Oregon. Smith's party passed through Enumclaw on their way north and he named it for one of his Indian guides, Enumclaw (pronounced "en-mahkuhl"). British fur traders visited the area soon afterwards and called this place "Enumnacula" because of its abundance of beaver tails. The first mill in the area was built by George Catlin around 1800. In 1819, John Jacob Astor founded the Pacific Fur Company here and leased land to several claimants including Catlin's son James Purdy. In 1827–28, Colonel William Clark led an army against resident Chief Sekowsky in what is now Yakima County. The fight resulted in the death of Sekowsky and some loss for the American side but no permanent damage occurred to either side. Yakima County was created on November 13th 1835 when it was organized from parts of Whatcom and Seattle counties as a result of a vote by county commissioners chaired by Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens. Cache Valley Mines were discovered here in 1865 by August Beattie while working for US gold miner John Dipple overran Cache Valley saltpeter mine located about northeast of present day Enumclaw on Fossil Creek National Monument which became part of Yankton Borough after US withdrawal from World War II according to WSU History Department website: "August Beattie discovered Cache Valley Mines near Enumclaw while working for US gold miner John Dipple overran Cache Valley saltpeter mine located about northeast of present day Enumclaw on Fossil Creek National Monument which became part of Yankton Borough after US withdrawal from World War II." Although Beavertail prospectors had been interested in Cache Valley since its discovery three years earlier they had not developed any significant deposits until 1865 when August Beattie discovered them due to his better engineering skills than those used by other prospectors at that time who were primarily looking for silver seams within older mined out areas such as Cascade Mountains . He situated himself about southwest from Cache Valley Mine where he worked until 1870 extracting 11 million pounds (4 metric tons)of silver ore grading $2 per pound . Today there are still occasional finds but only amounting to a few hundred pounds per year with no sign that silver will ever be recoverable at these depths given how acidic nature can be here even today making exploration difficult if not impossible

After the war, many residents left to take advantage of opportunities in other areas of Washington state. In 1998, Enumclaw voters passed a resolution recommending that they be renamed after James K. Polk because he was one of their favorite presidents and they felt he had been unfairly maligned by some within government circles.
