Enumclaw is located on the easternmost edge of Thurston County and to the west of the city of Olympia. The name "Enumclaw" was given by George Vancouver during his mapping expedition in 1805. He named it after Mount Enumclaw, located in what is now King County, Washington. At that time, only about 10 miles (16 km) wide and 3 miles (4 km) long, its surface consisted of rolling hills and valleys with an average elevation of only 100 feet (30 m). Today much of this land has been developed as agricultural acreage around what are now populous cities such as Seattle and Bellevue. However, there remains significant forested terrain within town limits that supports a variety of wildlife including deer, elk, turkey vultures, osprey and bear. There are several theories concerning how Enumclaw got its name: one suggests that it originated from Native Americanansk pronunciation meaning "hollow place", while another suggests that it may come from an early settler's recollection of hearing animals called "enuma" or "eastern high." Another theory suggests that because there are many places called Eastern High near Thurston County's border with King County - including Enumclaw - settlers dubbed their new community something similar to its neighbor east of them without realizing its connection to Mount Enumclaw. Whatever the origin may be for Enum Claw's name – or even whether it ever had one – local residents continue to call themselves by this moniker today since no other name seems to fit quite perfectly anywhere else around hereabouts! Although there has never been any official town meeting held at which residents could gather together under one roof to adopt a single governing document like those used in larger towns across the United States - probably because such gatherings would have resulted in chaos given how different each enumslash community feels about government compared to larger municipalities – some form unofficial government has always existed within outskirts council chambers where citizens meet illegally every few months or so just to discuss common issues such as fires/police patrols etcetera without having to go through formal channels like voting orlaws! Enumclaw is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Enumclaw were Native Americans who lived in the area for thousands of years before European settlement began. In 1847, George Stephenson and his partners built the first railway in America from Seattle to Tacoma and then founded Enumclaw as a summer home for their families. In 1874, John Wesley Hill bought 10 acres (4 hectares) of land southeast of Enumclaw and began to build a farm called "Hill's Farm". When Hill died in 1875, his family sold the farm to Amedee Olson for $1,000. Olson named the farm "Enumclaw" after one of his employees named John Enumclaw (1819-1887). A post office was established at Enumclaw on December 8th, 1876, by order of Governor David Goodall. The name was changed to "Seattle" on February 14th 1907 due to confusion with similar names being given to townships in other parts of King County such as Snoqualmie and Federal Way. The first store in town opened on May 5th 1889 by J.W. Whitehead under the name "Fremont Mann's Store". The store closed around 1915 but reopened as an appendix store within Pacific grocery stores chain until itclosed its doors forever in 1969 when Interstate 5 bypassed downtown Seattle proper connecting Puget Sound with Central Washington through Everett and Lynnwood etc., necessitating closure of most local grocery stores along with most department/department stores across Western Washington resulting in significant job loss for many people including many residents of Enumclaw who lost their jobs within minutes or hours when I5 cut off all supply lines that had fed their local supermarkets
