On July 4, 1876, a group of Ellensburg men and women rallied to support the United States during the American Civil War. The event was dubbed "The Fourth of July Celebration." In 1907, the town's first public library opened its doors. At that time, it was located on Second Street in what is now the Ellensburg Municipal Building. In 1916, the library moved to its current location on Main Street in downtown. On April 26, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his fourth inaugural address in Ellensburg. This event was also celebrated with a parade and picnic on ensuing Sunday. In 1957-58, renovations were made to the town hall which included new floors and an addition for classrooms and a movie theater. That same year saw the opening of Ellensburg's only shopping center - The Mall at Main Street - which served as both a retail destination and local services center for residents and businesses within walking distance of one another
