Ellensburg, Washington is a small town located in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. Ellensburg has been inhabited by the Skagit people since the area was first settled by other tribes of Indians in the late 18th century. In 1861, when Washington became a state, it included what is now Thurston County and Sitka and Ketchikan Counties as well. The Town of Ellensburg was incorporated on January 1, 1907. The land around present day Ellensburg was first hunted by indigenous peoples before being explored and claimed by fur traders during the early 1800s overland trade route connecting Asia with North America via Siberia Via Yakutia (the modern day Ural Mountains). By 1825 these traders had discovered gold and silver deposits at nearby Butte Creek which led to plans for an permanent settlement here while they hunted more traditional game such as moose, caribou, bear and wolf in their spare time; this activity continued until 1849 when Fort Wool was founded to protect newly discoveries along river valleys east of Seattleites expanding into Puget Sound primarily because of potential irrigation potential for this vast new area.
