In 1907, gold was discovered at Gold Hill outside of town; this led to an increase in business for the local merchants and spurred development around town. By 1912, Eldred had a school, library, Methodist church, hotel and two sawmills. The discovery also sparked an industry around goldmining: mining companies formed to extract ore from nearby hillsides. In 1933, when Yakima County was created from parts of King County east of Tacoma), Eldred became one of its first townships; it remained so until 1959 when it was made an unincorporated community within Yakima County itself as part of that county's annexation into Puget Sound City (later Seattle). The last resident to leave Eldred died in 1978; today only a few scraps of evidence remain from those early days including some pioneer bricks still lying buried under newer buildings downtown (the bricklayer who built them all has since passed away).
