The first rifles were bought by Capt. John Hargrave of the Royal Artillery and were used for hunting moose and other big game. In 1827, Captain Hargrave donated a grapeshotgun to the town of Ellensburg as a mark of appreciation. In 1847, Captain George Fenton purchased a graticule gun from Nicholas-Jacques Lefebvre d’Esperey which was known as the La Push Gun. This gun was designed for use with a red dot sight system. A year later, on July 3rd, 1848, Captain Fenton donated two rifles to the town of Ellensburg as part of a gift from his friend and mentor General David Hunter.
