The first permanent settlers in what is now Ellensburg, Washington were George Vancouver and his brother-in-law, Alexander McGillivray. They arrived in 1792 and built the first log cabin on the banks of the Clearwater River. TheMcGillivray's were among the earliest white people to reside in what is now Ellensburg. In 1814, James Cook Memorial Bridge was built across the Clearwater River between Ellensburg and Union City to commemorate Cook's exploration of this area during hisvoyage of Discovery in 1814.
