Ellensburg is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ellensburg were fur traders in the early 1800s. In 1814, George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and named it "Ellensburgh" after John Lennon's father. The town was founded in 1881 by Luther Burbank and others who purchased land from the Chilkat tribe of Indians. In 1907, a school for boys was built on land donated by Anna J. Stephens and Henry Matson; it became Ellensburg High School in 1919 when nearby Marysville moved to its own high school building. In 1929,ELLENSBURG TOWN COUNCIL approved annexation of unincorporated areas east of I-5 which included much of central King County including the towns of Lynnwood and Issaquah. At that time there were only 8 residents in Ellensburg Borough (now portion of Bellevue) with 10 businesses; today's Borough has over 100 businesses with an estimated population exceeding 200 thousand! The discovery of oil resources near Edmonds WA led to industry growth in the late 1800s as well as commercial development around town beginning with a hotel/motel called The Palace on First Avenue which opened in 1905 and continues to provide lodging and dining services today known as Blue Moon Café & Grill
