The valley has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years and today's Ellensburg is founded on land that was part of the Spokane Indian Reservation. In 1855, when surveyors arrived in what is now Ellensburg to map out a route for the Union Pacific Railroad, they found a village of about fifty people living near where the river flows into Lake Wenatchee. A year later,ellensburgh built its first store and began trading with traders from around Puget Sound. By 1860, there were several businesses in town - including a mill and flour milling operation run by John Wiedeman and his son-in-law Jacob Sheppard - as well as a hotel and two churches. In 1861, James Kapp became headmaster of nearby Whitman College and decided to move his school from Olympia to Ellensburg so students could have closer access to education. With new funding coming in from Seattle investors, Kapp renovated old buildings in town into classrooms and barracks for college students. As tensions between America's slaveholding South and Abraham Lincoln escalated during the American Civil War, many residents in towns throughout Washington Territory chose sides: some sided with Confederacy while others chose not to fight (the " neutrality party"). At least one resident of Ellensburg did choose war: James Hickey joined Confederate forces early in 1861 after learning that Washoe County would be responsible for caring for Confederate prisoners being held at Fort Sumner on Snake Creek Indian Reservation. As war continued to waged across much of Northwest America, few people paid much attention to events happening inside their own communities - but those who did took note of how things were going elsewhere on Earth. In 1865, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved south through Washington Territory towards Richmond following Vicksburg's fall; many residents turned against him because he was not sympathetic towards slavery like they had hoped he would be (many believed that Lincoln had wrongfully chosen Grant instead). Many lost hope that anything good could come from war ever again after all these years – until finally something amazing happened: Congress passed an act authorizing them to give each state within its borders $10 million dollars per day towards reconstruction efforts following Civil War death & destruction! This helped turn around fortunes for many local businesses which had gone bankrupt during wartime; especially since most workers were poor long before then thanks largely to prior economic hardships brought about by Reconstruction efforts back home . Although it didn't last very long due mainly à lack of support among Ulysses S Grant's fellow Republicans – most notably among military leaders associated with Northern Reconstruction policies – this event marks a turning point for what would become known as "Washington Normalcy." For years thereafter Main Street hummed without any major incidents taking place; until recently when crime rates have begun increasing once again amid tight housing markets both here & nationwide .
