Ellensburg is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett-Bellevue metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ellensburg were traders and missionaries from Russia in 1792. In 1847, James Kippenberger founded the first post office in what is now Ellensburg. The town was platted in 1851 by George W., Sixth Baron Wenham, with help from his brother-in-law Daniel Webster. The town name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "the crossing over." In 1907, the Eastern Iron Manufacturing Company built a large steel plant on the banks of the Snake River east of town. In 1912, voters approved a $2 million bond issue to finance public works projects such as a new school and courthouse. That same year saw another important development when Eastern Electric Railway (now Union Pacific Railroad) laid track through town and connected it with Seattle via Everett Junction. Ellensburg experienced its largest growth period during World War II when many people left for military service or joined industry because of wartime demand for steel products. At one point, nearly half of all jobs in the city were related to war production! After 1945, many residents moved away to become villages or townships within King County; however, most remnants of downtown exist today as businesses close their doors at night near Broadway and State Street NW

In 1907, the city of Seattle was established nearby, Population growth slowed after World War II until the early 21st century when population growth resumed due to increased commuting into the area from Everett, Bellevue, Lynnwood, Issaquah and Tacoma. Today,Ellensburg is an agricultural center with a significant manufacturing sector as well as a number of small businesses. It is home to Eastern Washington University - one of America's most prestigious universities - as well as several hospitals including Harborview Medical Center and Mountlake Terrace Hospital.
