In 1924, the Kittitas Valley Railroad was built through Eldersburg and became part of the Seattle-Tacoma Railway system. In 1951, when KennewickWasilla Airport opened, Eldersburghs share made it one of only two communities within Washington state that had both airports open at the same time. In 1973, a new high school was built north of town and named for General George Armstrong Custer which served as an interim school until a proper high school could be constructed south of town later that year. The new high school replaced an earlier building which had been destroyed by fire during World War II. The old High School building still stands today as a museum which houses artifacts from both buildings including photos and memorabilia from both schools along with other historical items dating back to Kittitas County Schools history classes throughout those years! There are also several universities located within or nearby the city limits: Northwest Community College-Snoqualmie Campus; Eastern Washington University; Hilltop Community College; and Seattle Pacific University-Lake Union Campus.
In 1847, the Ellensburg Mining and Smelting Company was organized in response to the gold rush that had started in western Washington. The company began production of lead and silver ore near the town of Ellensburg. In 1851, the company became part of the Republic of Oregon and moved its operations to what is now Portland, Oregon.
